How do SDSU meal plans work?

SDSU offers meal plans to students living on campus. These meal plans are designed for food and beverage purchases only and cannot be used for merchandise, gift cards, alcohol, or gratuity. Consumable over-the-counter medications are eligible for purchase on the meal plan, but toiletries are not.

General Information

Meal plans at SDSU are preloaded onto RED ID cards, which are distributed during orientation. If you need a replacement ID, you can purchase one at the SDSU Card Office. The meal plan begins on specific dates for each semester, with the first meal available on Thursday, August 17, 2023, for the fall semester, and on Monday, January 15, 2024, for the spring semester.

Where can I use my meal plan?

Meal plans are accepted at over 30 dining locations on campus, including all six Aztec Market Convenience Stores. You can easily identify the locations that accept SDSU Meal Plans by looking for the red MP logo under the hours & location tab. However, please note that the Faculty Staff Club, Chipotle, and Trader Joe's do not accept meal plans.

Can I change my meal plan?

If you are a university housing resident, you have the option to change your meal plan during designated change weeks. Freshmen residents can choose between the three traditional plans (Flex 5, Flex 7, and Meals Plus), while second-year and upper division residents can choose from four plans (Flex 5, Flex 7, Meals Plus, and 2nd Year Plan). To change your meal plan, you will need to sign a new agreement with the SDSU Dining Office. Please note that there is a $10 change fee required at the time of the request, and cancellations are not allowed at any time once a meal plan has been selected.

The designated change weeks for meal plan adjustments are as follows:

  • September 11-15, 2023 - Effective Monday, September 18, 2023
  • November 13-17, 2023 - Effective Monday, January 15, 2024
  • February 5-9, 2024 - Effective Monday, February 19, 2024

It's important to note that balances from the old plan will not carry over when moving out of the Meals Plus or 2nd Year Plan.

How many meal days are in a semester?

The number of meal days in a semester varies. For the fall 2023 semester, there are 18 deposit weeks, 86 weekdays, and 34 weekend days, totaling 120 days. For the spring 2024 semester, there are 16 deposit weeks, 78 weekdays, and 28 weekend days, totaling 106 days.

Are unused meal plan balances refunded at the end of the academic year?

No, there are no refunds on unused balances at any time. Students are encouraged to make full use of their meal plans during their time in residence halls.
